Jul. 30th, 2002 09:38 amOkay. I watched Caligula. I am now ready to offer to you, my friends, my enlightened opinion on this cinematic masterpiece.
It wasn't nearly as bad as people led me to believe.
I think perhaps going into it with the big, bold writing on the video box that proclaims it as a Penthouse Films International production brings the expectation level waaaaaaaaaay down. How good can it be if it's made by Penthouse??? I mean, right there on the back of the box it says "The combined talents of cinematic giants Malcolm McDowell, Peter O'Toole, and Shakesperian actress Helen Mirren, along with an acclaimed international cast and a bevy of beautiful Penthouse pets.. Puh-lease.
So. A couple of icky scenes (none of which really got to me since my dad had me watching Faces of Death at a relatively young age), lots and lots and lots of sex (how is this bad???), and watchable actors (almost didn't even recognize Peter O'Toole). I don't think it's deserving of all the huge hype, but neither do I think it's the Worst. Movie. Ever. I'd watch it again, and not just for the nekkid Malcolm McDowell.
Anyone want a copy? ::grin::
